On August 12, 2026, the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR, (EU) 2025/40) officially entered into full force, replacing the previous Packaging Directive that had been in place for nearly three decades. The regulation covers all packaging placed on the EU market, including bottle caps, labels, inks, adhesives, and all other components.

PPWR Heavy Metal Testing Requirements
Under Article 5 of the regulation, the total concentration of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺) in all homogenous materials of packaging must not exceed 100 mg/kg. Testing must be performed on each homogenous material layer separately—substrates, inks, coatings, and adhesives all require individual analysis. PFAS testing is mandatory only for food-contact packaging

Haida Equipment RoHS Testing Solutions
Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (XRF) provides precise testing for RoHS-restricted elements including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and hexavalent chromium (Cr). The instrument achieves detection limits of Pb ≤5 ppm and Cd/Cr/Hg/Br ≤2 ppm, fully meeting the PPWR requirement of total heavy metal content ≤100 mg/kg.

Key Advantages:
Fast and efficient: Complete multi-element synchronous testing within seconds to minutes
Non-destructive: XRF is a physical elemental analysis method that does not damage samples
Wide sample compatibility: Supports direct testing of solid, powder, and liquid samples
Simultaneous multi-element analysis: Single test provides content data for Pb, Cd, Hg, Cr, and multiple other elements
Large sample chamber: Accommodates various packaging components including bottle caps, labels, inks, and adhesives
Complies with international standards: Meets RoHS 2.0 Directive, IEC 62321, GB/T 26125-2011, and other standard requirements
As a professional manufacturer of precision testing equipments with years of experience in the testing equipment industry and multiple packaging testing-related patents, Haida Equipment helps packaging manufacturers efficiently complete PPWR heavy metal compliance testing and successfully access the EU market.
